Rohtang pass is the connecting link between Kullu and Lahaul Spiti district. Since I have written article on How to rent a bike from Bhuntar for Leh Ladakh or Parvati valley number of people have asked me that How to get a Rohtang Pass permit for bikes.

Why we need Rohtang Pass permits?

It all started in 2015 when National Green Tribunal surveyed the glaciers of Rohtang pass that had slight soot formation and hence concluded that they need to limit the vehicles visiting Rohtang pass. And later NGT limited the number of vehicles to 1000 per day.

These 1000 vehicles included 600 petrol vehicles and 400 diesel vehicles including bikes. The step was criticized by some peoples and at same time praised by few organization.

But the message was clear from the NGT that “Nature first”.

Do we need Rohtang pass permits for bike?

The most frequent question which I received last year in my mail was that “Do we need a Rohtang Pass permit for bikes” so I thought of writing an article on How to get a Rohtang pass permit for bikes.

Its been years since I am writing articles on Himachal pradesh, Manali and other unexplored places. The main thing that I can conclude is that 70% of tourist visiting Manali visit this place in search of snow. When entire nation’s mercury level are at rise this lovely hill station in Himachal pradesh can make you feel chills in your spine.

As I mentioned earlier that NGT has regulated that only 600 petrol and 400 Diesel vehicles will be allotted to visit Rohtang pass and beyond.

Important thing: Only cars are allowed to visit Rohtang pass and return on same day whereas bikes are not allowed to visit Rohtang pass and return on same day.

So if you are planning to visit Rohtang pass from Manali in your own or rented bike then make sure you don’t return from Rohtang pass on same day otherwise you will be imposed with a fine of 5000 Rs.

So What is the solution?

So If you are planning to visit Rohtang pass in your bike than you just need to take out a permit of Beyond Rohtang. Now the thing is that when you will visit Rohtang pass you have to keep one thing in mind that now you can’t return from Rohtang pass to Manali at same day.

So now what are the options?

• The option are that now you need to head toward Khoksar a place 30 km from the pass. Here you can book a camp online or instead find a camp on arrival. After spending a night you can return back to Manali.

This is the easiest way for the bike riders to visit Rohtang pass.

Rohtang Pass permit online for bikes

No Vehicles are allowed on TUESDAY as the day is marked for maintenance of the Pass.
Congestion Fees can only be paid for next 6 days from the current date.
Printout is compulsory for all permissions.

• Vehicles having wrong information on CONGESTION FEES SLIP as compared to valid proofs will not be allowed to cross the barrier.
• In a week (Tuesday to Monday) only 2 permits can be obtained for each vehicle.

My Trip To Rohtang Pass

I planned a small trip to Rohtang pass this year. Where I came to know about all the rules and regulations about the NGT regarding the ecosystem. I am too concern for the ecosystem but the thing was that I was too eager to travel and visit Rohtang pass. I have been traveling to Manali since my childhood and believe me its is one of my favorite destination after Kasol.

In Bhuntar I once made a great friend Thakur Bhai- 8988265439 who helped me in every aspect from bike renting to tent renting and believe me guys you can’t get a better guide than this person for Leh ladakh, Spiti or any other place in Himachal pradesh. So if you are planning a trip to Leh Ladakh or anywhere just give him a call and just tell him to plan an itenary he will also do that.

This year when I first landed in Bhuntar my first concern was to get a bike and this time I just needed a Himalayan. Himalayan is a bike from Royal enfield that is believed to be the best off road bike till now in the budget of under 2 lakh.

So as I told you earlier my first and last option for renting bike in Bhuntar is always Thakur Bhai. I just gave him a call and within few minutes he arrived at the place with white color Himalayan bike.

Later when I told him about the plan to visit the pass, at that time he described me everything in detail. I was really sad that I just had 2 days and now if i waited for one more day for the permit it would be very difficult for me to return back on time. But as I said that this man has solution for everything. I don’t know he just called somebody and arranged a permit for the bike. So this was all about my experience of visiting Rohtang pass.

Conclusion

This online permit system have some pros and some cons but still it is better than the old system of getting permits from SDM office waiting in huge cues. Some may criticize the decision of NGT of limiting the number of vehicles visiting pass but still it is a great move to preserve our nature.
