This fort is the most treasured antiquity of ancient India and was previously known as Dhameri fort. In 1672Mughal Emperor, Jahangir renamed it as Nurpur fort after his beloved wife Noorjhan Jahangir. Inside the fort, there is swimming where Nurjhan uses to take bath now it is not in a very good condition filled with mud.

Nurpur fort is not the only last relic of the glorious past of Kangra but it also reminds of mythical dancer Noori whose names are an imitation of Noorjhan. Noori was said to be more beautiful than Noorjhan and she was also gifted with a beautiful voice. She was profoundly skilled with the art of dance. Noorjhan was insecure with her beauty and talents she was scared that she could attract more fame than legendary Noorjhan so she never allowed her to venture outside the palace. When Noori used to dance, the echo of her anklets inside the palace kept the people around spellbound and mesmerized.

The old folk anecdotes tell us that there was a great fear to Noorjhan from Noori’s beauty and voice this feeling of envy made Noorjhan take a conjurer step when once she found Noori seducing Jahangir from her beauty. This feeling of envy lead to Noorjhan took a devastating step she slashed Noori’s tongue off and the music is the fort was silenced forever. This incident also leads to confrontation between Noorjhan and Jahangir relationship forever and left the fort deserted and destroyed the peace of the fort. This leads to Noori’s spirit stuck in the fort and locals can still hear her screaming during the night and even the sound of her anklets. So, you must dare on your own to have this spooky experience.
